The construction of Khimsar Fort started in 1523. It was in the 18th century after the construction of separate wing for ladies or zenana the Thakurs shifted to the fort. In 1940, there was addition of another wing by Thakur Onkar Singh.

Today, the fort prides itself with the fact that it is still a home to the 20th generation of the Khimsar Thakurs and one of the finest heritage hotels of India.
